Day 12: Reflecting on artificial intelligence

Welcome to Day 12! Today’s activity focuses on bringing together the AI tools, themes and conversations explored throughout this series.

Today’s activity is written by Roshni Bhagotra (Senior Digital Learning Coordinator) and Hannah Hyde (Digital Learning Engagement Coordinator).

Over the last 12 days, we’ve experimented, learned and engaged with many different approaches and use cases for AI from creating “art” to intellectual property to deepfakes. On the final day of the 12 days of AI, we invite you to pause and reflect on the insights, information and ethical considerations surrounding the usage of AI in education.

Evaluation and reflection are an important part of the educational process and can often be a positive opportunity to better understand the impact and value of educational resources and experiences for students, tutors or colleagues. Critical and reflective practice is key to ensuring we are using AI practices responsibly and ethically.

We invite you to evaluate and reflect on your own learning throughout the last 12 days. What skills have you gained or improved since starting this activity series? Are there any new questions that you’re asking about AI now? Do you have any new ideas on how to approach the fast-paced, everchanging trajectory of AI technologies?

Activity

Create an artefact that represents how you feel about artificial intelligence and how it relates to your context. This could be an image, a video or a sound generation. You could use two or more different tools in combination to create your unique artefact.

Here are some of the tools we’ve used:

  • Miro (text, image and diagrams)

Here are some ideas:

  • Create an image generation using Adobe Firefly
  • Using the prompt generations in Mapify, craft a video in synesthesia
  • Upload some recorded audio in Holly+ (you may need to convert your m4a to mp3 and then add it to a video in Synesthesia
  • Create some character image generations with runway.ml and embed these in a workflow within Miro

You might consider these while generating your prompts:

  • Appreciation for how AI can guide an iterative creative process
  • Concerns about the impact of AI on creative practitioners
  • Curiosity for the future uses of AI in a learning and teaching environment
  • Questions you have about the environmental impact of AI tools

We used Firefly with the prompt:

create an image depicting the curiosity of the possibilities of artificial intelligence in art and design higher education but concerns environmental impact of using AI

A person is sitting at a futuristic desk. In front of them is a row of computers with a tree growing up and networking line.
A classroom of people are looking at a shadowy outline of a head looking to the side. Their brain is on display but it's multicoloured indicating creative activity.

Discussion

Join us in the Teams space to share your artefacts and reflections. If you don’t have access to the space, email us at teachingexchange@arts.ac.uk for the attention of Hannah.

We hope you will also take some time to fill out our feedback form about the 12 Days of AI.

  • How do you want your students to use AI in their learning and eventual professional practice?
  • Do you feel your artefact is a personal creative work or an AI generation?
  • What have you learned during this series?
  • Where do you want to take your AI learning journey now?
